CHUCK IS OUT OF TOWN ASSIGNMENT

GREGORY CREWDSON MOVIE: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS

Watch the movie about how Gregory Crewdson makes images. There is a scene in the movie where they show you one of the sketches that is made and also show you and read the written description of the image. his images are all about narrative and storytelling. Over the next two weeks you will be working on a project where you will make a Crewdson style image. I want you to start by sketching out what that might look like, use what you are learning in drawing, I also want you to write out a very detailed description of what the image looks like. One of the lines Crewdson used that I thought was wonderful is “Leftover coffee is long cold” I want you to really think about the details that could describe this story. This might change, I want you today to get some ideas. Claire had mentioned you are doing some dioramas, possibly think of those as a vehicle for an image.

The project I like he did was a few years after this. If you have time you can watch this I did a while back during the pandemic.

CHUCK HAS COVID ASSIGNMENT

Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

Alphabet photography, in its simplest form, is finding letters of the alphabet in the world around you and photographing them. You’ll be amazed at what you can find in ordinary everyday objects when you look hard enough. Then you put all the photographed letters together to create an alphabet.

The goal of the Alphabet Scavenger Hunt is to locate and create images that represent each letter of the alphabet. The project enables students to look deeper into the everyday and reflect on the world around them. Students are confronted with signs and symbols throughout the day. Students must choose how to express and combine graphic elements using the visual language of photography with includes the elements and principles of art.

Why create alphabet photography?
Doing this helps teach you to see beyond the obvious. It is als a great way for new photographers to learn how to use their cameras in Manual mode.

Your task is to see, and then photograph, naturally occurring letter shapes in and around the school.

  • You will photograph the alphabet, all 26 letter shapes. Then your goal is to spell your name (any combination of first, last, initials, etc.) If you have multiple letters, take multiple images for each letter. You can not use the same image twice for the same letter.

  • Look at everyday objects and structures and then compose your shots in such a way that you exclude everything that doesn't look like the letter or number shape. This is most challenging part of the project. Think about all the rules of composition we have discussed in class so far.

  • Shapes must be naturally occurring and not actual letters or numbers. (i.e. don't spell a letter using pencils or french fries, and don't photograph existing letters or numbers from a sign that is printed or drawn.) No Graphitti.

  • Self-test: If you show your image to a friend and they say "Hey, that looks like a Q!" then you've done a good job. If they say "Why did you take a random picture of your lock?" then it's probably not obvious enough that it's in the shape of a letter or number.

CAMERA SETTINGS:
Shooting Mode: M
ISO: Your choice (lower = for brighter light; higher = indoors/darker light) Change it if you need to but don’t rely on it for the first thing to change. Use shutter and aperture first. Remember don’t shoot slower that 1/60 of a second
Orientation: Either horizontal or vertical (your choice). These will ultimately be cropped anyways.

Example of all letters

Example of a name

DO this during the class period and we will go over in Photoshop how to create the layout in a future class.
